Acireale Carnival

The Carnival of Acireale

The Carnival of Acireale is widely considered one of the most beautiful in Italy. In the baroque streets of this seaside town just north of Catania, enormous papier-mâché allegorical floats parade alongside the spectacular 'carri infiorati' — floats covered entirely in fresh flowers — in a riot of colour, satire and music.

Running across late winter for several days (with grand parades on the main weekends and Shrove Tuesday), it fills Piazza Duomo and the surrounding avenues with crowds, lights and street food. Acireale is only about 20 minutes from the apartment, making it easy to enjoy the evening shows and return to your own space afterwards.
