Piazza del Duomo is the monumental heart of Catania and part of the UNESCO-listed late Baroque of the Val di Noto. At its centre stands the Fontana dell'Elefante — the black lava-stone elephant locals call 'u Liotru, the very symbol of the city — framed by the Cathedral of Saint Agatha, the elegant Palazzo degli Elefanti (the town hall) and the bustling Via Etnea.
Rebuilt in luminous baroque after the 1693 earthquake, the square is the natural starting point for exploring the old town: from here you reach the Fontana dell’Amenano, the fish market, Via Crociferi and Teatro Massimo Bellini in a few minutes on foot. It is especially atmospheric in the early evening, when the lava-stone façades glow against the white limestone details.
