Monastery of San Nicolò l'Arena
One of the great Baroque wonders of Catania: the monastic complex is among the largest in Europe and offers splendid architecture, cloisters and guided tour opportunities.

What to see at the Benedictine Monastery
The Monastero dei Benedettini di San Nicolò l'Arena is one of the largest Benedictine monasteries in Europe and a masterpiece of Sicilian late Baroque, recognised by UNESCO. Built and rebuilt over lava flows and after the 1693 earthquake, it impresses with its grand cloisters, frescoed corridors and a façade of extraordinary detail.
Today it houses the Humanities Department of the University of Catania, blending centuries of history with lively student life. Guided tours (run by Officine Culturali) lead through the monumental kitchens, the cloisters and the archaeological levels beneath the floors, revealing Roman and lava strata. It sits in the heart of the old town, easy to combine with Piazza Dante and Via Crociferi.
