Castello Ursino
Ancient medieval castle built in the 13th century, today a museum and custodian of many historical testimonies. Perfect for history enthusiasts.

What to see at Ursino Castle
Castello Ursino is a powerful 13th-century fortress built for Emperor Frederick II of Swabia. Once standing on a promontory above the sea, it was surrounded by land during the catastrophic 1669 eruption of Etna, whose lava flow reshaped the entire coastline — you can still see the dark lava stone around its base.
Today the castle houses the Museo Civico, with archaeological finds, medieval and Renaissance art and temporary exhibitions, while its squat towers and inner courtyard recount centuries of Sicilian history. It is in the old town near the fish market and Piazza Federico II di Svevia, perfect for history lovers.

Why is the castle no longer by the sea?
The 1669 Etna eruption pushed a vast lava flow into the sea, extending the coastline and leaving the once-seafront castle surrounded by land.
